Parable of a Modern Tragedy We Can Reverse. Maybe…

Once upon a time, there was a handsome, accomplished, generous businessman whose charisma seemed almost supernatural. Of course, he wasn’t perfect. No one is. But his heart was soft, even though his work ethic was the opposite: toughness.

Let’s call this gentleman “Sam.”

The wealthier Sam grew, the greater his generosity grew. The number of charities he supported was legion. Although he lived in comfort and elegance, he never failed to support a genuine need or to care about a broken spirit. With time, Sam’s fame increased. He became as famous as a movie star and was praised in the media by his many admirers.

A Slimy Villain

But, as you may have noticed, this world has its share of small-minded souls who would rather hurl bricks than breathe. One of these was a slimy character we’ll call “Slug.” Slug had a grand scheme. He had concocted a business plan that would dupe a lot of people out of their money and make him rich. All he needed was a wealthy backer to get the ball rolling.

Slug approached Sam with his evil plot, but Sam wasn’t interested. When Slug demanded Sam’s help, Sam threatened to report Slug to the police.

Wrapping up his black heart in his shattered dreams, Slug developed a new plan. He was going to get even with that stuck up, richer-than-God know-it-all. He was going to bring Sam down!

It wasn’t hard for Slug to find a crew of equally sleazy characters, who were jealous of Sam. They formed a “Let’s Get Sam” club. It’s not necessary, for the purposes of our parable, to detail the wicked, nefarious schemes they devised. Let’s just say they slathered on lies and slander. They manipulated our modern, credulous media. And they slithered through the dark web, planting anti-Sam land mines.

The Tragedy

As they implemented their conspiracy, Sam’s business interests began to shudder. He lost clients. He had to sell his luxury car, his mansion, and his company jet. Eventually, he lost his business. Of course, a man like Sam still had friends. He got a job that allowed him to support his family and pay for his children’s education. But he no longer had money for charities. Once he paid his tithe at church, he had nothing extra.

Soon, a children’s hospital closed. Then a homeless shelter. Many individuals around the city felt the loss of Sam’s generosity. He wept at night because he could no longer help the brave men and women who had depended on him – men and women who would have been able to climb back onto their own, two feet and earn their own way if Sam could provide a hand up when they were down.

Sam wept. Slug chortled. And hundreds of souls suffered.

It’s probably obvious to you by now that “Sam” is “Uncle Sam.” There are black-hearted people all over this country who are patting themselves on the back because their efforts to destroy the United States are so effective. They are proud of themselves. They pretend they’re righting some nebulous wrong. They criticize the country, emphasizing our mistakes and ignoring our amazing accomplishments.

We all know the U.S.A. has faults. But when we’re strong, we can do a lot of good in the world. And the kind-hearted people who populate America have always helped a lot of people in a lot of nations, including our own.

When we’re strong militarily, we’re able to oppose national bullies with some real power. But if national policy saps our military of its strength, who else in this world is going to stand up for freedom? Every day, our grip on our own freedoms seems to be getting weaker and weaker.

Making America Great Again

I guess what I’m trying to say is, let’s get behind MAGA. Of course, we want to make America great again for our own sakes. But Americans aren’t the only ones who benefit from a strong America. If we let the Slugs of the world destroy our strength and dignity, we’re not just letting ourselves down. We’re letting down all the people and all the nations who look to the United States for courage and comfort and vision.

And here’s the sad truth the Slugs of the world won’t tell you until it’s too late. In spite of their rhetoric to the contrary, they don’t care about justice or generosity or equality. They’re just power mongers. And if we continue to let them run amok they’ll prove that old saying, “Absolute power corrupts absolutely.”

I pray with all my heart that we Americans will pull the blinders from our eyes. That we will reclaim a vision of an America with dignity and purpose. An America that has the will and the willingness to be a blessing to the whole world!

Footnote: I suggested in the title of this blog that we may be able to reverse the tragedy. The truth is that many signs indicate we are moving relentlessly toward the days of tribulation described in the Bible book of Revelation. The destruction of our beautiful country may be just another sign that we’re living in the end times. However, I believe God calls people of every generation to support righteousness and stand for liberty in any way we can. For that reason, I am convinced we will please God with our efforts to make America as strong and as honorable as possible. Like Esther, we were born for “such a time as this.”
