What if you had a weird condition that caused you to be blind 23 hours a day and sighted one hour a day? How do you think you would spend your daily hour of vision?
I would enjoy the amazing variety of colors and shapes that make up our world – flowers, skies, kittens and so many others! I would make sure I knew the location of the furniture in my home so I could move around without injuring myself. I would race through the park and enjoy the rush of wind in my face while I was able to see where I was going. I would drink long and deep of the sight of the beautiful faces of my loved ones.
And those 60 minutes would guide and nourish me through the 23 hours of daily darkness.
Spiritual Light
I believe we actually have a similar situation in the spiritual sense. Psalm 119:130 says, “The entrance of Your words gives light…” (NKJV). When we spend time studying God’s Word, its wisdom enlightens our souls. We receive guidance for our daily decision making. We gain an understanding of the history of our planet – where did it come from, where is it headed? And that insight gives us understanding into our own history – where did I come from, why am I here? Most precious of all, we find out that there is a loving God who is seeking a relationship with us.
I’m not saying everyone should spend an hour a day reading and studying the Bible. I am saying that the more time you spend in the Word, the more light you will have to guide you through life. And, unlike visible light, you can carry Word-light in your heart and mind 24 hours a day. First you read it, study it, memorize, and meditate on it. And soon it begins to dwell IN you and illuminate your path.
For Example
Here’s a simple example. We all know the Golden Rule: “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” If you know and believe in the Golden Rule, you can allow it to guide your actions many times every day. It will shut your mouth before you criticize or yell at your spouse. It will pull your foot off the accelerator before you cut off another driver. It will open your heart and wallet to people less fortunate than you.
Here’s the bottom line: It is impossible to have the abundant, victorious life Jesus offers without hiding God’s Word in your heart. His laws and wisdom will illuminate those mysterious inner recesses of the human being that we call spirit and soul.
So open your Bible – turn on the Light.
Having read this I believed it was very informative.
I appreciate you finding the time and energy to put this article together.
I once again find myself personally spending a significant amount of time both reading and posting comments.
But so what, it was still worth it!
Thank you so much for your comment. I sympathize with you – reading and commenting can take a lot of time. But I’m glad you decided it was worth the time!
