God’s Kryptonite

When I was young and comic books cost a dime, I was a big Superman fan. I didn’t realize it, but those were Sci-Fi stories. I’m not into Sci-Fi now, but I was WAY into Superman.

Handsome, gentle, and good, Superman was a super-hero in every sense of the word. A space alien infant, he arrived from the planet Krypton on a UFO. He was adopted and raised by conscientious, caring parents named Kent in the farming community of Smallville. They named him Clark.

After Clark grew up, he lived in Metropolis and worked as a reporter for the Daily Planet. It was at this point that I had learned to read and took up the story. (I was never exposed to and have very little knowledge of radio, television, or movie versions of the Superman story.) I was always thrilled with my super-hero’s tireless efforts to thwart evil and promote justice in the world.

Super Powers

Superman’s powers were impressive. He was invulnerable, super strong, able to fly, and had X-ray vision. His only serious weakness was kryptonite. Any stray piece of that green stuff was able to weaken and even kill the super-hero.

In fact, if it weren’t for kryptonite, you might almost say Superman was like God.

But, of course, the “man of steel” doesn’t quality because the real God can’t be touched or killed by any substance. And Superman’s powers pale in comparison. The Almighty Creator of the universe, who is eternally existent, is infinitely powerful and infinitely intelligent. He didn’t just create the universe, but He controls, holds together, and runs the whole vast system and everything in it.

God Is Omnipotent…Isn’t He?

God is not subject to any substance or any power. He is supremely sovereign and untouchable. Right?

Well, not exactly because…remember? God died.

Jesus Christ who walked on water, quieted storms, fed multitudes, defeated blindness, and raised the dead…died.

Jesus Christ who spoke worlds into existence, divided light from darkness, and created living beings in His own image…died.

Jesus Christ who had, but didn’t need, legions of angels to defend Him, who couldn’t have been killed by any human being or any spiritual being, except by His sufferance…died.

It shouldn’t have been possible. It shouldn’t have happened. So why did it?

God’s Kryptonite

Well, God’s “kryptonite” is Love: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16, KJV

God loves you so much and longs so earnestly to have you with Him in Heaven forever that He did what He had to do to make you eligible for Heaven. He died in your place. He paid for your sins.

His love for you killed Him. Do you care?

If you care, tell Him.

If you don’t care, you don’t understand.
