Highway to Heaven

Shortly before His crucifixion and death, Jesus Christ told his disciples that no one could get to Heaven unless they went through Him. (John 14:6) Okay, but how does one go “through” Jesus?

Christians have arranged some scriptures in an order that we call the “Romans Road.” It is a list of verses from the book of Romans that explain a) Why we need salvation through Jesus and b) How we can receive the eternal life in Heaven that only He offers. (I will be referring you to the NIV, New International Version of the Bible, in this blog.) Here’s your highway to Heaven:

The Romans Road

1 Romans 3:23 – We are all sinners. Therefore, God cannot receive us into His Heaven on the basis of our own merits.
2 Romans 6:23 – Because of our sin, we deserve to die – we have earned death. But God offers us the gift of Life in place of death.
3 Romans 5:8 – Here’s how God made His gift of Life available to us. He sent His Son to die in our place. Our sin debt was transferred from us to Jesus. And He paid it! “Why?” you might ask. “Why would Jesus pay my debt?” He did it because He loves you with an infinite love.
4 Romans 10:9 – Okay, here’s the “how to.” a) You say that Jesus is your Lord, and b) You believe in your heart that God the Father raised Jesus from the dead.
5 Romans 10:13 – Here is a word of assurance. This verse promises that all of us who call on the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for our salvation will be saved.

The First Step in Your New Life

If you agree with and accept the Romans Road, it’s time to begin talking to God. He’s your Father now. You can use this prayer or something similar out of your own heart:

“Father, I confess that I am a sinner. I am grateful to accept the gift You offered me when You let Your Son die on a cross in my place. Right now, I am choosing to make You my Lord because I believe with all my heart that You raised Jesus from the dead. Thank you for saving me. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Next Steps

In many ways, you are a new person now. (II Corinthians 5:17) Living life as a child of the King of all creation is an exciting adventure. Some things you can do to help you grow in your new faith are:

1 Read the Bible.
2 Pray
3 Locate and attend a church where the Bible is believed and taught
4 Enjoy fellowship with your new family – your brothers and sisters in Christ

Welcome to the family of God!
